Postgame Recap:  Hawks Catch RoughRiders Late

By WBH, 01/26/19, 11:30PM CST

Win Season-High Fifth Straight

After trailing for more than 51 minutes of Saturday’s game, the Waterloo Black Hawks finished with a late flurry to top the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 3-1 at Young Arena.

Cedar Rapids jumped to the lead at 2:10 of the opening period.  Jason Polin swept a rink-wide pass from the top of the right circle to the left wing; Aidan McDonough caught the feed in stride and snapped in his shot from near the faceoff dot.

Waterloo outshot the RoughRiders in each of the first to periods.  The Hawks were turned away on four power plays in that time, including a five-minute major.

The game turned in a four-on-four situation with 6:36 remaining.  Hank Sorensen blasted a shot on net from the left circle.  Griffin Ness kept the rebound alive at the top of the crease, and Sorensen – following his shot – received a handoff at the edge of the crease to flip his second shot, under the crossbar.

Waterloo’s fifth power play yielded the winning goal.  Matej Blumel’s attempt from the high slot was knocked down, but Xander Lamppa slipped in a follow-up at from just above the crease at 16:13.  Solag Bakich added an empty-netter to secure the win with 5.1 seconds remaining.

Logan Stein stopped 19 of 20 shots for the win.  Waterloo finished with a 40-20 edge in chances.

The Black Hawks return to the ice next for John Deere Weekend.  Friday and Saturday, Deere employees and their families will receive discounted tickets, and the Hawks will wear their 2019 John Deere jerseys, to be auctioned after Saturday’s game benefitting the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley.  For tickets, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
