OT for the Second Time vs. the Force

Mason Palmer scored his second goal of the season Friday night; it was his second game-winner of the year too, lifting the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 2-1 overtime celebration against the Fargo Force at Young Arena.

Two minutes into the extra period, Vladislav Firstov was moving away from the Fargo net along the right wing boards.  At the end of a long three-on-three shift, Firstov turned before reaching the blue line and fed a pass across the slot to Emil Ohrvall, waiting at the bottom of the opposite circle.  Ohrvall quickly redistributed the puck across the net mouth, where Palmer was waiting to knock it in.

The Hawks had led for most of the first period, thanks to a goal at 4:59, which had been set up by Palmer.  The defenseman made a breakout pass to Griffin Ness, who handed off the puck to Connor Caponi in the neutral zone, setting up a two-on-one.  Caponi took the shot himself from the right circle, snapping his try past Ryan Bischel.  However, Fargo scratched out a goal with 12.3 seconds remaining before intermission.  A faceoff win by Josh Nodler set up Tanner Vescio’s shot from the blue line; with traffic around the netmouth, the puck hit the top corner.

Waterloo outshot Fargo in all three periods of regulation and 34-19 in total.  It was the third consecutive game in which Stein limited the opposition on one goal; he turned in 18 saves.

Neither team could find a successful formula on the power play: the Hawks 0-for-6, while the Force were turned away on three tries.

Waterloo’s five-game homestand and John Deere Weekend both conclude on Saturday versus the Muskegon Lumberjacks.  The Hawks’ John Deere jerseys will be auctioned after the game to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley.  For tickets – including discounted seats for Deere employees and their families – call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
